A Message from "Dog Trainers to the Rescue", a newly forming 501(c)3
:Due to the current travel restrictions and limitations on public
gatherings related to the COVID-19 virus, we have made the decision to
cancel our May 23 and 24 lecture series with Dr. Kathy Murphy that was
to be held at the San Diego Humane Society. All tickets will be
refunded in full and you should expect to receive a separate email
from Eventbrite. We are planning to reschedule this event either later
this year or in May/June 2021 and will be notifying everyone when we
are able to finalize dates.
We realize this situation is having a major impact on everyone's life,
business, and social interactions and that we are all searching for
ways to make our new normal. In the spirit of sharing, we are
including links below to Dr. Kathy Murphy's Neurobyte series, where
she interviews three canine brain scientists and researchers. Each of
these runs for about an hour and was presented as a Facebook Live link
on the "Barking Brains" Facebook page. Please enjoy and feel free to
share within your community and we hope you enjoy the opportunity to
learn a bit more about how the canine brain works as well as being
introduced to Dr. Murphy and some of the fabulous scientists active in
this field of study today.
1. Neurobyte One - Dr. Murphy chats with Dr. Muhammad Spoctor of the
Canine Brain Project about how domestication may have had an effect on
dog brain anatomy.

2. Neurobyte Two - A fascinating conversation with Professor Erin
Hecht of Harvard University that explores breed differences in dog
brain anatomy and what they may tell us about breed purpose
adaptations.

3. Neurobyte Three - A lively and engaging discussion with Dr. Paula

neurobiology of memory.

We look forward to everyone getting safely through this global medical
situation and will be certain to keep you up to date on efforts to
reschedule Dr. Murphy's lecture series "An Introduction to the
Neuroscience of Dog Training and Behavior".
We will also keep you updated on how Dog Trainers to the Rescue is
able to expand and develop as a non-profit with the mission of
providing low-cost and no-cost access to behavioral health education
and information for rescue groups, shelters, and Humane Society staff,
volunteers, and foster families. We are dedicated to the belief that
sharing our collective knowledge of science-based canine behavioral
information, techniques, and practices will have a positive impact on
the lives of animals in our care.
Again best wishes for health and safety during these trying times and
enjoy the above links from Barking Brains.
Thanks,
Kim

_Although this lecture is intended for human attendees, we understand
if you need or would prefer to bring your dog. If you would like to
bring your dog, please be certain that your dog will be comfortable in
a lecture hall with limited breaks, lots of people, and the potential
of other dogs either inside the lecture or outside. Please notify us
if you plan on bringing a dog so we can arrange the best location for
you._
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NEUROSCIENCE OF DOG TRAINING AND BEHAVIOR
Kathy Murphy BVetMed, DPhil, CVA, CLAS, MRCVS
UNDERSTANDING WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE DOG’S BRAIN CAN IMPACT HOW
YOU TRAIN AND INTERACT WITH THEM. THIS TWO-DAY WORKSHOP WILL PROVIDE
AN INTRODUCTORY OVERVIEW OF NEUROSCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES AND HOW THEY
APPLY TO VARIOUS ASPECTS OF TRAINING AND BEHAVIOR.
ON DAY 1 we will begin with applied functional anatomy and physiology,
and the various ways that they are modified during neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is the process by which brain structure and function
changes in response to our surroundings and interactions. Delving into
the complexity of neuroplasticity provides a gateway into
understanding where the laws of behavior come from, and what
mechanisms are at play when working with dogs at different stages of
development. We will take a look at fundamental neuro-physiological
mechanisms such as attention, arousal, reward and fear conditioning,
directly applying the science to practical examples or cases.
ON DAY 2 we will look at how our choice of training method can
influence brain structure, function and ultimately well-being; before
moving on to understanding some of the neurological mechanisms of
trauma and ways we might apply that knowledge when working with
traumatized dogs.
Literature and cases used to illustrate principles will be
multi-species, everything from worms through to primates. And
take-home messages will be designed to support you being able to
easily communicate what you learn to other enthusiasts and clients
without the jargon.
ABOUT KATHY:
Dr Kathy Murphy is a neuroscientist and veterinarian. She qualified
from the Royal Veterinary College London in 1999 and went into mixed
general practice, before completing two post graduate veterinary
qualifications, a PhD in behavioral neuroscience at the University of
Oxford, an Assistant Professorship in Neuroscience and Anesthesiology
at the Icahn School of Medicine NYC, plus a residency in Veterinary
Anesthesia and Analgesia. She is now the Director of the Comparative
Biology Centre at Newcastle University UK, where her clinical and
research work are focused on welfare related neuroscience, anesthesia
and analgesia. She is a founding member of EthicsFirst, a collective
that campaigns for structured ethical debate and decision making
within the veterinary profession. She has a long-standing interest in
dog behavior and training, was trustee and veterinary advisor for the
Rottweiler Welfare Association for 15 years and has fostered and
rehabilitated many dogs. She founded Barking Brains (a neuroscience
outreach project) in July 2019 in order to merge her professional
expertise with her passion for dogs. She currently has three of her
own dogs - two chihuahua mixes (Dennis and Minnie), and a rottweiler
mix (Nancy) who she does scent work with.
