Terry Tempest Williams has been called "a citizen writer," a writer
who speaks and speaks out eloquently on behalf of an ethical stance
toward life. A naturalist and fierce advocate for freedom of speech,
she has consistently shown us how environmental issues are social
issues that ultimately become matters of justice. This is your
invitation to start your morning in the Presidio with a talk by Terry
Tempest Williams as she celebrates our national parks.
America’s national parks are breathing spaces in a world in which
such spaces are steadily disappearing. This is why more than 300
million people visit the parks each year.
In _The Hour of Land, _TERRY TEMPEST WILLIAMS, author of the
environmental classic _Refuge _and the beloved memoir _When Women
Were Birds_, offers a gift of celebration: an exploration of our
national parks, and what they mean to us and we mean to them. From the
Grand Tetons in Wyoming to Acadia in Maine to Big Bend in Texas to our
own PRESIDIO IN THE CITY, WILLIAMS CAPTURES THE UNIQUE GRANDEUR OF
EACH PLACE WHILE UNEARTHING WHAT IT MEANS TO SHAPE A LANDSCAPE WITH
ITS OWN EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY INTO SOMETHING OF OUR OWN MAKING. Part
memoir, part natural history, and part social critique, _The Hour of
Land _is a meditation and a manifesto on why wild lands matter to the
soul of America.
After the talk, enjoy a book signing with Terry Tempest Williams. All
Things Book will have a pop-up bookstore featuring Tempest Williams’
books including the new paperback release of The Hour of the Land
($18).
After the talk, The Presidio offers many fun things to do on Sunday
afternoons from museums to hikes to great food trucks. Make a day of
it!
