Dear Friend,
We are pleased to announce that the SAG HARBOR Lions Club has rolled
out its “SHLC/PIERSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND” for college-bound PIERSON
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. As The SAG HARBOR Express and The Southampton
Press recently reported, our goal is to significantly increase our
fundraising from $5,000 to $50,000 annually. This is in recognition of
the vastly increased costs of higher education since the SHLC
established the SCHOLARSHIP MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS AGO. In addition to
the College SCHOLARSHIP, funds will be provided to students of need in
the eighth grade to assist with the costs of their annual class trip
to Washington, D.C. This trip is sometimes the first time our young
PIERSON STUDENTS TRAVEL AWAY FROM HOME, and we believe a visit to our
nation’s capital is an important part of their education.
Education is the great equalizer in society and the key to opportunity
in America. We believe the increased “SHLC/PIERSON SCHOLARSHIP
FUND” will help deserving students reach their full potential and
become engaged citizens. When I received the Lion’s Club SCHOLARSHIP
OF $1,500 in 1973, it helped me to become the first in my family to
attend college. We have also heard the testimony of other PIERSON
GRADUATES WHO HAD THEIR LIVES CHANGED BY RECEIVING VITAL SCHOLARSHIP
MONIES.
Two anonymous Lion’s Club members have PLEDGED $5,000 per year for
five years to the “SHLC/PIERSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND” to give our
effort a running start. We now need your help to reach our ambitious
goal, and we believe grassroots funding is the best way to achieve it.
This way we all become stakeholders in this educational endeavor, by
supporting the PIERSON-SAG HARBOR community we cherish. We will
strengthen our ties with one another, and the PIERSON SCHOLARSHIP
RECIPIENTS AND THE YOUNG EIGHTH GRADERS WILL FEEL THE WARMTH OF A
COMMUNITY THAT CARES.
Please join us in taking the “PIERSON PLEDGE” and contribute below
to the “SHLC/PIERSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND.” To reach our goal we are
asking you to commit to $200 per year for five years. However, any
amount is most welcome and will make an important difference. See
below on how to take the PIERSON PLEDGE. If you have any questions,
please contact either of us. We look forward to hearing from you.
Gratefully,
