Dr. CARLA HAYDEN, the 14th Librarian of Congress, the first BLACK
AMERICAN AND THE FIRST WOMAN TO HOLD THIS POSITION, will join the
BLACK WOMEN'S CONGRESSIONAL ALLIANCE (BWCA) to commemorate BLACK
HISTORY MONTH WITH A SPECIAL CONVERSATION ABOUT HER REMARKABLE CAREER
AND THE POWER OF representation. Dr. HAYDEN'S APPOINTMENT BY
PRESIDENT OBAMA IN 2016 WAS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT GIVEN THE BLACK
STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY IN OUR COUNTRY AND THE LEGACY OF SLAVERY. During
slavery, enslavers prohibited enslaved people from learning to read or
write, and enslaved people who were caught reading or writing were
severely punished. It is with great pride that we celebrate Dr.
HAYDEN’s extraordinary career and her historic rise to leading the
world’s largest library, the Library of Congress.
