 ABOUT THE FILMS
“_Weinberg Cello Preludes_”
Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) was a Polish Jewish composer who fled the Holocaust to resettle in Stalin’s Russia — only to be arrested as part the “doctor’s plot.” The belated discovery of Weinberg’s music, and of the story behind it, has galvanized audiences in Europe and the US. With PCE principal cellist Ben Capps.
“_Shostakovich in Time of Wa_r”
This unique film compares three Russian musical responses to the trauma of World War II: Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky. The featured artists include one of the great names in Russian pianism: Alexander Toradze.
“_The Black Virtuoso Tradition_”
Scott Joplin, James P. Johnson, and Art Tatum are among the composer/pianist comprising a sizzling “Black Virtuosso Tradition” unique to the American experience. Featuring Steven Mayer (“piano playing at its most awesome” — The New York Times).
