What are young people capable of? (Pay attention, adults!)
Follow along with a classroom of 4th graders as they try to achieve world peace in just eight weeks. The film “World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements” shows how John Hunter’s game triggers an eight-week transformation of children from students of a neighborhood public school to citizens of the world. Their engagement, trust in themselves and their relationship with their teacher, confidence in their own voices, and their ability to collaborate are an inspiration.
SKOOL takes us around the world and shows us, young people who speak up, take risks, encourage failure, act with empathy, and approach learning and teaching in ways that move as quickly and fluidly as Silicon Valley—a stark departure from the system they’ve inherited. These young people not only embrace change, they thrive on it. SKOOL makes us question the assumption that we need more “adults in the room” and makes a bold proposal that could change the face of education overnight: What if what we’ve actually needed all along is more young people in the room?
We close out the day with a screening of films created by young filmmakers from across the country who answered the challenge to imagine what their learning would look like if they woke up each morning with the goal to “learn” by pursuing your interests, curiosities, and passions? What would their day look like? Ultimately, if they had primary ownership over the design of their education, what would learning look like for you?
Join us for one or all three sessions.
