Miami will be hosting its record-breaking 11th Super Bowl, Super Bowl
LIV on February 2, 2020. The Lionfish Bowl , the official lionfish
derby of the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee’s Ocean to Everglades
(O2E) initiative , is taking place on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday,
December 8 at Matheson Hammock Marina in Coral Gables. Hosted by Frost
Science, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
and the Host Committee, the Lionfish Bowl invites divers and
snorkelers to hunt for and remove invasive lionfish. Teams will
compete for more than $16,000 in cash prizes. Teams should consist of
two divers and/or snorkelers. Registration fee for the Lionfish Bowl
are $80 per team and all teams must be available for a Captain’s
Meeting at Frost Science on Friday, December 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. Lionfish Bowl Festival The weekend will also include a public
lionfish festival on Sunday, December 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
including live music, games, information booths and lionfish tastings.
Lionfish, an invasive species, are predatory marine fish native to the
Indo-pacific and Red Sea, but which have been introduced into Florida
waters. These invasive species have spread throughout all of the
Southeast US and Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas and the Caribbean where they
impact the environment, economy and tourism. A 2010 scientific
publication noted lionfish as among the top 10 global threats to
