In college, Don McNeal played defensive back for the University of Alabama and his team won two National Championships and three Southeastern Conference titles. Don had the opportunity to play for the legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. His most memorable moment was when he stopped Scott Fisky of Penn State on the one-yard line in the Sugar Bowl game of 1978. Two plays later, Barry Krauss made a tackle on the goal line that has now become famous and is known as the "Goal Line Stand."
Don played professional football with the Miami Dolphins for ten seasons. While playing for the Dolphins, he participated in two Super Bowl games against the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, they lost both games. A number of people might remember the third down and inches play where John Riggins ran off tackle and right through the arms of Don. "That is one play I will always remember, simply because every Super Bowl, I am reminded of that play, "says McNeal."
Since hanging up his cleats in 1989, he has stayed active in the community with charity events in both Miami and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Don felt the Lord calling him into ministry. He shared this with his Pastor and was offered a position as the Counseling Pastor at New Testament Baptist Church. As a positive role model for kids, and aside from his position with the church, Don was a spokesman with Sports World Ministries. This ministry consists of twelve professional athletes who have a heart for the Lord and youth of today. He travels throughout the country speaking with young people. His challenge to the youth is to encourage them in their faith, motivating them to become all that they can be. " I know I can make a difference in their lives just by being there for them, and by setting the example that kids need today." "I have had a lot of positive people in my life to encourage me, and now I have the privilege to give something back," says McNeal.
Don has been licensed, and ordained to preach the gospel. He has been awarded the honor of being named as a member of the 25th Silver Anniversary Team for the Miami Dolphins. In addition, he was selected to the Centennial Anniversary Team for the Alabama Crimson Tide. In January, 2007, Don's first book was released. Home Team Advantage is a book about Don's life on and off the football field. In May of 2008, Don was inducted into the "Alabama Soorts Hall of Fame."
