Antonio El Pipa (Antonio Ríos Fernández), dancer and choreographer,
was born in Jerez de la Frontera to a Gypsy Family in the Santiago
quarter. He is a grandson of Tía Juana la del Pipa, a matriarch of
Flamenco, and a nephew of Antonio and Juana la del Pipa, from whom he
inherits his stage name. He first learned to dance in his family
circle and later studied with Fernando Belmonte, Paco del Río,
Angelita Gómez, Matilde Coral, Manolo Marín and Manolete. He began
his professional career with Manuel Morao, Cristina Hoyos and La Tati.
In 1997 he founded his own critically acclaimed company, which has
debuted numerous award-winning shows, including “Vivencias,” a
tribute to his grandmother’s memory; “Generaciones,” with the
special collaboration of Matilde Coral; “Puntales,” which
premiered at the Seville Biennale; “Pasión y Ley,” with original
music by Dorantes and guest starring Lola Greco; as well as “Puertas
Adentro,” “Danzacalí,” “Gallardía,” and “Así que pasen
XX años,” a celebration of its twentieth anniversary.
His numerous awards and honors include: LEGEND AWARD (Pasarela
Flamenca de Jerez, 2019), PALMA DE PLATA (City of Algeciras, 2015),
NATIONAL PRIZE FOR FLAMENCO (Jerez Flamencology Chair, 2008), STARS OF
FLAMENCO (for “De Tablao” del Corral de la Morería, Madrid,
2006), BEST DANCER (Flamenco Hoy, Madrid, 2001), CRITICS’ PRIZE
(Festival de Jerez, 1999), NATIONAL CRITICS’ PRIZE (National
Association of Spanish Critics, Lucena, 1998), COPA PAVÓN (for
‘Vivencias’ del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, 1997), and
many others.
Antonio El Pipa is considered a true heir of the purest and most
authentic gypsy dance, free from artificial and superfluous ornaments.
The specialized press has named him a worthy successor of veterans
Antonio Gades, Mario Maya and El Güito.
