Substance Use & Mental Illness: The Chicken & Egg Problem of Dual Diagnosis

PRESENTER: JOYCE MARTER, LCPC, FOUNDER OF URBAN BALANCE COUNSELING CENTERS For many who struggle with a mental illness, self-medicating with drugs and alcohol can be a way to cope with the pain and symptoms they are experiencing. Many develop a substance use disorder alongside another mental health condition, and effective treatment needs to address both components to achieve lasting recovery.  Joyce Marter has been in private practice as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) since 1998, and is passionate about educating on the treatment of dual diagnosis.
