Marginally recognized during the 1980s for his comedic acting and
writing contributions to Saturday Night Live and This is Spinal
Tap, Christopher Guest gained widespread notoriety for spawning the
"mockumentary" genre with a string of feature films in the 90s and
00s, beginning and ending with this pair of spoofs on the desperate
plight of stage and screen entertainers.
Guest himself stars as Corky St. Claire, the tenacious thespian leader
of the Blaine Community Players tasked with staging a musical
production celebrating the Missouri town's 150th anniversary in
WAITING FOR GUFFMAN. Touting his near-Broadway experience and
promising his cast of amateur townspeople a visit from an elusive New
York theater critic, Corky fearlessly works to balance his passion for
Blaine's proud history of stool manufacturing and UFO landings with
his own unquenchable thirst for the spotlight.
With the Academy Awards celebrating 90 years of self-congratulations
this March, there has never been a better time to revisit FOR YOUR
CONSIDERATION, Guest's relentless ridiculing of Hollywood and the
egomaniacal threat it poses to itself. When the movie-within-the-movie
"Home for Purim" generates some online Oscar buzz, the talent is
thrown into a tizzy of desperate efforts to garner public favor while
attempting to maintain a facade of nonchalance. Will changing the
title to "Home for Thanksgiving" earn them a spot on the red carpet?
Having starred in all of Guest's staple mockumentaries, Catherine
O'Hara was ironically rumored to be an Oscar contender for her role
in the latter but was never nominated. Other actors lending their
improvisational brilliance to both movies include Eugene Levy, Parker
Posey, Bob Balaban and Fred Willard.
TH/Cinema makes proud use of Thalia Hall's state-of-the-art sound and
digital projection equipment with a full bar, candy, popcorn and
plenty of seating available.
