Well there are two reasons for that: 1- Clearly their magic wasn t protective enough to keep them from getting hit by a rock, and 2- It s just good magical hygiene for a witch to protect themselves. Either from the trials of daily life, or from the otherworldly gobbledygook that they ve been conjuring up, protection is an essential spell to have in our arsenal.
