What is the latest research conducted in our county? Find out from the experts. The District is well known to have outside agencies and individuals to study various topics in regards to ecology and culture. Each presenter will have 30mins to talk about their topic and answer questions. Coffee will be available with some light snacks.

  • "Archaeology, Environment, and People in McHenry County" by Clare Tolmie, Northern Illinois Field Station Coordinator, U of I Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State Archaeological Survey. She began her career as an archeologist in England. She has a BA in Archaeology from the University of Southampton, England, and a PhD in Anthropology from University of Iowa. She has worked in Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites in France, on Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Mediaeval sites in England and on everything from Palaeindegaou to Industrial sites in the U.S. Her particular areas of expertise are faunal analysis and historic archaeology. Clare's interests lie in subsistence and landscape use, particularly how prehistoric people adapted to changes in their environment and how historic landscape organization changed over time.
  • "Ticks" by Kristy Heck, Field Staff Supervisor for McHenry County Department of Health
  • "Mussels for McHenry - A Partnership Story" by Andres Ortega, Aquatic Resources Supervisor, Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Andres holds a B.S. and M.S. in biology from Northern Illinois University. Based out of the Urban Stream Research Center in Warrenville, IL, he leads a team of aquatic professionals in supporting recreational fisheries, restoring aquatic habitat, and augmenting populations of freshwater species including mussels, Hine's emerald dragonflies, and Great Plains mudbugs. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking and biking on local preserves with his two sons.
