Down In Front is performing a cinematic exorcism of one demon on
wheels: we'll be riffing 2008's Speed Racer! For those not in the
know, Speed Racer was one of the earliest Japanese cartoons presented
to American audiences back in the '60s, and it's much like the anime
much of our audience will find familiar: it takes a competitive
activity (stock car racing), centers on a character who is obsessed
with it (the eponymous Speed), and then puts that character into
increasingly high-stakes matches that completely throw out the rules
and make you wonder if the writers know anything about the activity in
question. Long story short, Speed Racer was dumb. Then along came Lana
and Lilly Wachowski 40 years later, to make the most exciting,
visually stimulating, arguably perfect live-action recreation of a
stupid cartoon about race cars. We'll be at Mrs. Murphy and Sons Irish
Bistro, with full bar and menu available to us, so come hungry! The
bistro is on Lincoln Ave, near the intersection of Lincoln and Irving
Park, a block from both the Irving Park + Damen/Lincoln and Damen +
Byron bus stops, and a six minute walk from the Irving Park stop on
the Blue Line. They have a small parking lot, and paid street parking
is also available. The event fee for this show is $10. We will accept
cash at the door or you can get them online at the link. We'll see you
Down In Front April 7th for Speed Racer! Oh, and no talking during the
movie; that's our job!
