As a South Carolina native, Christopher Andrews’s earliest musical
experiences were singing in his local church choir and listening to
his parent’s record collection. After showing interest in the
saxophone, Chris soon joined his middle school band under the
direction of David Allison. Allison, the principal trumpet for the
South Carolina Philharmonic, sparked Chris’s interest in both
classical and jazz repertoire by routinely practicing for various
concerts before and after class. While in high school, Chris became a
section leader in the school’s top concert band and played lead alto
in the jazz band. At this time Chris began attending local jam
sessions, most notably the Hunter Gatherer, where influential tenor
saxophonist Skipp Pearson lead a weekly session. Chris attended South
Carolina State University where he studied with saxophonists Jonovan
Cooper and Roland Haynes Jr. Some of Chris’s first professional
performances were with the Roland Haynes Quintet. In 2007, Chris was
selected to play lead alto with the HBCU All-Star Big Band. The group
was invited to perform for the IAJE Conference held in Toronto, Canada
as well as the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival. After received his
B.A. in Music Industry, Chris began work on a master’s degree in
jazz performance at the University of South Carolina under the
direction of pianist Bert Ligon. Ligon, an avid jazz performer and
composer, helped expand Andrews’s knowledge of jazz theory and
overall musicianship. After receiving a M.M. in jazz studies, Chris
went on to share the stage with greats such as Fred Wesley, Wycliffe
Gordon, and a whole host of notable performers. Chris is currently
working on his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music as well as working as a bandleader, sideman, and
adjunct professor at Northern Kentucky University. $10 drink minimum
