GLOBEMED IS A NON-profit, international student-run organization that
emphasizes the sustainability of partnership as well as health equity.
As a network, it is GLOBEMED'S MISSION TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF INEQUALITY
AND INEQUITY AROUND THE WORLD. In order to do this, each UNIVERSITY
CHAPTER IS PARTNERED WITH AN ESTABLISHED GRASS-roots organization
abroad, working with the partner to identify its needs and how the
chapter can support them. The UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI CHAPTER IS
PARTNERED WITH SOCIAL ACTION FOR WOMEN (SAW), located in Mae Sot,
Thailand. As a chapter, we aim to raise $10,000 each year to support
SAW's efforts to address issues of education, access to basic and
preventive health care, the rights of women and children, and minority
rights for those who have crossed the border from Burma to escape
severe political unrest. In CINCINNATI, we also work to raise
awareness of issues in our own community. We host a series of
campaigns, advocacy events, and hundreds of community service hours
throughout the year, and one of our events has included an ANNUAL
BENEFIT DINNER, at which we bring together members of the community to
discuss GLOBEMED'S WORK AND RAISE FUNDS. The evening includes a silent
auction, DINNER, and a keynote address. Last year, we were fortunate
to gross over $9,000 at our BENEFIT DINNER, 100% of the profits went
directly to SAW. Totally GLOBEMED AT UC WAS ABLE TO SEND $12,000 to
SAW. We hope to not only raise $10,000 again this year, but continue
to foster partnership, collaboration, and initiatives to create health
equity both in CINCINNATI AS WELL AS IN THAILAND. GLOBEMED AT UC'S
BENEFIT DINNER IN 2020, held at the Phoenix in downtown CINCINNATI,
will feature the chance to hear from community leaders and GLOBEMED AT
UC ALUMNI WHO REPRESENT THE VALUES THAT GLOBEMED UPHOLDS. We are
delighted to announce that our keynote speaker is Jeremiah Griswold
who is the owner and lead artist at White Whale Tattoo in CINCINNATI
WORKING TO PROVIDE FREE COVERUP WORK FOR FORMER GANG MEMBERS, sex
workers, and others hoping to change their personal narratives locally
and internationally. Caroline Hensley, MPH, a GLOBEMED AT UC ALUM AND
CURRENT UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI MD CANDIDATE, will also speak to her
experiences in GLOBEMED AND BEYOND. Guests are also welcome to bid on
items from a large silent auction while enjoying an open bar and live
music by Rob Enyard trio. Partnerships and collaboration will be
created throughout the night among professionals and students alike.
