_THEIR STORY_
REGGIE HARRIS AND GREG GREENWAY WERE BORN THREE DAYS APART, ANCESTRY
FLOWING THROUGH THE SAME PORTAL OF HISTORY—RICHMOND, VA. THEY ARE ON
A PILGRIMAGE TOGETHER, ONE THAT BEGAN MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS AGO.
THOUGH THE RACIAL DIVISIONS THAT ARE THE REALITY IN AMERICA STARTED
THEM IN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS, THE AMAZING POWER OF MUSIC, RESPECT,
ADMIRATION, AND SHARED VISION HAVE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER AS FRIENDS
AND COLLEAGUES.
_WHO THEY ARE_
Reggie Harris [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0JThIAijOw] is the
Music Education Director of the Living Legacy Project
[http://www.uulivinglegacy.org/] of the UUA, co-leading annual tours
through the hallowed Civil Rights Grounds of the South. He is a
Woodrow Wilson Scholar, and half of the well-known folk duo, Kim and
Reggie Harris [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCIBc1s3pag]. He has
led hundreds of programs on Race and Social Justice.
Greg Greenway [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy_ipUiDXm0], founding
member of the musical group Brother Sun
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77A1ZrdEFfs&list=RD77A1ZrdEFfs#t=7],
was a part of the planning committee of Marching in the Arc of
Justice, the UU conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the
Selma Voting Rights Action. For two years, he had the honor of having
his song, “Rosa Parks” play when rosaparks.com opened. Greg and
Brother Sun led his song, “What Must Be Done”
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P6r1fgiUcU] before thousands of UUs
at the opening service of the General Assembly in Providence, RI.
Together and individually, Reggie and Greg have brought the issues of
Race to the hearts of audiences across North America.
_WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?_
The work of justice making is long and difficult. Together, Greg and
Reggie share not only a story of overcoming, but provide a living,
breathing embodiment of celebration, creative resistance, and joy, and
their fluent stories and outstanding musicianship make it contagious!
Both are committed to inspiring people, and encouraging others to take
that step beyond the comfort zone. As they exemplify what is possible
when people of good will reach in love across the racial divide, they
encourage others to build the relationships that are, in the end, a
path to healing.
