In partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec, Augusta Adult and Community Education, and the Capital Area New Mainers Project (CANMP), this three-session training prepares community members to become literacy volunteers supporting multilingual learners in our region. Participants will be introduced to the missions and work of all three partner organizations and explore the vital role that volunteers play in empowering adult English Language Learners. The training includes an overview of Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec's structure, adult learning principles, and effective strategies for both one-on-one tutoring and facilitating group community conversation events. Key topics include basic English language instruction, cultural awareness, digital literacy, and support for learners navigating work, health, and daily life in a new country. The course uses I Speak English by Ruth Johnson Colvin as a primary resource. Participants will practice tutoring techniques, engage in reflective activities, and learn from experienced volunteers. Upon completion, attendees will be ready to begin making a difference in the lives of multilingual adults in our community.
