"Political Diabology: Apologies for God"
The relationship between the political and the theological is not
exactly established. Where precisely does one begin and the other end?
Or does one divide from the other as earth divides from heaven, this
world from the next? How would the two spheres in question, if indeed
separate realms, come into contact in the first place? How would they
lose touch once they do collide and conjoin? Does one realm present
the critical expression of the other or simply its annulment? In a
series of essaylets on texts ranging from the Hebrew and Christian
Bibles to the early modern political theologies of Thomas Hobbes and
Baruch Spinoza to the twentieth-century works finally of Carl Schmitt
and Walter Benjamin, Yu-jin Chang explores these questions and others
in a project he calls a "Political Diabology."
Yu-jin Chang teaches European literatures at Emerson College, where he
is Associate Professor in the Department of Writing, Literature &
Publishing and Assistant Dean in the School of the Arts.
