This is a fun series! We share together how to create, illustrate and
maintain a Naturalist & Field journal. This includes practicing
sketching, nature illustration skills, recording field observations,
and simply writing about what we see, including how we feel. In
Spring, when it's still cold, we might hike more than sketch. In the
Summer, we might choose a spot and sit there the whole time. Often,
the warmer it is, the longer the stops! The series generally runs once
a month, usually on first the Friday of the month (unless both our
col-leaders are out of town). Over the year, we explore a few sites
of the reservoir and cover ecology, phenology, birds, insects, mammals
and the many critters that make the different habitats of Fresh
Pond.
⚠️ This is an RSVP EVENT. We favor event quality over attendance
quantity, so this is a limited size participants event. Please make
sure you only register if you are committed to attending and cancel
your ticket if your plans change so as not to limit opportunity for
others. We will email you when necessary if there is any change plan
due to weather and other reasons. Thanks and register today!
AGE: Teens (14+) | Adults | Seniors.
Ⓘ INSTRUCTIONS
WEATHER: Our events happen on cloudy and sunny days. We email
registered participants if we have to cancel due to rain, snow or
extreme cold!
RENDEZVOUS: Meet at Neville Manor (650 CONCORD AVE) today and there
is a small parking lot. There is a gazebo out front where we'll wait
for you, and then we will head to the field: Black's Nook, the
butterfly meadow, or some other spots. We'll provide parking permits
for non-residents of Cambridge, but please come on time as we'll be
moving about 5 minutes after starting time.
How to get there?
* You need parking permit if you are driving and don’t have a
resident parking permit, for Maher Park at 650 CONCORD AVE. We'll
provide you one upon arrival. Look for the traffic light at Moulton
Ave and turn right into the Neville Communities. Take a quick right
into the Maher Park parking lot. Google Maps can guide people from
your starting location.
* Buses down Concord Ave from Harvard Station. Bus routes #74 and
78 travel down Concord Ave with a stop at Moulton St (Directly
across from Neville Center and Neville Place). Cross at the light,
take the first right. Notice the sign that says Maher Park. The lot
is just beyond it.
* We are walking distance from the Alewife T. Leaving the station,
cross CAMBRIDGE Park Drive and take a right on Alewife Brook Parkway.
Walk over the bridge and you’ll see the Whole Foods shopping
center on the left. Continue to the rotary and turn right onto Concord
Ave. The entrance for the Neville communities is on the left at the
first working light. Cross at the light, take the first right.
Notice the sign that says Maher Park. The lot is just beyond it.
WHAT TO WEAR: We'll be journaling outside. Be prepared to walk a
little to get to our study area.
* Dress warmly when it's cold in the early Spring.
* Bring a hat to protect you from the sun moving towards the Summer.
* Think about bringing some thing you can sit on: A little piece of
tarp to sit right on the floor, or a camping stool can do wonders.
WHAT TO BRING:
* Your art supplies (remember that we may walk around, so light and
portable are key!) » Check our EwA Naturalist Daybag description
[https://tinyurl.com/ewa-journaling-daybag].
* A camera (or your phone), magnifying glass, and binoculars if
possible.
