CFD Applied to Turbomachinery

The first part of the talk will be a general description of finite-difference CFD, with emphasis on turbomachinery flows and geometries. Then a variety of results will be shown for turbomachinery flow simulations, including turbines, fans, and inducers in jet and rocket engines.

Sandwiches and drinks will be provided for attendees. Please register in advance so that we may order enough for everyone.

Professor Douglas Sondak

Doug Sondak started his career at General Electric’s jet engine facility in Cincinnati, working in the areas of thermo analysis methods and advanced fan and compressor aerodynamics. He then spent several years at NASA Ames, doing research in CFD and turbulence modeling, and then United Technologies Research Center, doing CFD development for turbomachinery. He also has an interest in high-performance computing, and was on the research computing staff at Boston University, and then MathWorks, where he solved MATLAB performance issues and managed an advanced support group. He is currently Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Wentworth, teaching fluids, thermo, heat transfer, and MATLAB.

Travel

1) Take the Fitchburg/South Acton line of the MBTA Commuter Rail to the Waltham stop. Walk north on Moody Street to the intersection with Main Street. Turn left. The Library will be two blocks up on the right.

2) Take the 70 Bus from Central Square or Watertown Square. Turn right when exiting the bus, the library will be .5 blocks up on your left.

Parking

There is a free parking lot behind the library. Parking is limited to two hours. After two hours, you must move your car out of the lot. There is also on-street parking around the library and a metered municipal lot one block from the library off of Lexington Street between Main Street and School Street.
