SmarterPics is a photo school in Old Town LANSING. This is a one day
event to help you better understand your camera. ANY Camera! Limited
to 10 people. Mark Chamberlin is a pro photographer with 15 years
teaching experience. We spend some time talking and understanding
core concepts in the morning. After lunch we spend the afternoon
walking around Old Town and learning hands on! The class is broken up
into four sections.
A. GENERAL CARE AND CONCEPTS
1. The basic rules and procedures for safely handling and cleaning
your equipment
2. Understanding lenses including what focal length means and how they
impact images. Also safe cleaning, swapping and filters.
3. Learn about basic accessories such as storage cards, cases, straps,
filters and batteries.
B. EXPOSURE BASICS
1. The Exposure Triad is made up of ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture
(F-Stop)
2. We learn how each of these elements interact with the others to
establish the “correct” exposure.
3. How each element impacts the image is discovered and when to make
changes to achieve desired results.
C. KNOBS AND DIALS
1. We go over all the various controls that impact your image
including the
A. Program/style modes wheel
B. Exposure compensation
C. ISO settings
D. Metering and Shutter modes

2. We demonstrate how and why each control is used to help you achieve
great images.
D: COMPOSITION
1. What are some of the key principles of creating a third dimension
2. How do we use contrast, color, textures
3. The Rule of Thirds
4. Learn some key concepts of composing portraiture and landscapes
5. Exploring perspectives and making creative decisions on content
6. A lot of this session is spent walking around and practicing in and
around Old Town
