Spain presents us with a dizzying variety of regional wines, but only
a few of them have established themselves as familiar to American wine
drinkers. To provide ourselves with a foundation for understanding the
fascinating and rapidly-evolving wines of this country, we’ll dive
deep into the better-known regions that are easily explored. We’ll
taste contrasting styles of Tempranillo-based reds from Rioja and
Ribera del Duero, floral Albariño from Rias Baixas, and premium
sparkling Cava from the Penedès. We’ll touch down in the “new
classic” region of Priorat, whose slate-covered vineyards underwent
a true renaissance. And we’ll include a Pago, one of Spain’s
unique single estate appellations. Fine producers will include
Raventós, Marques de Riscal, Muga, Tinto Pesquera, Lopez de Heredia,
Macán (Rothschild & Vega Sicilia), and Marques de Griñon.
