The Coming Talent Inversion: It's the New Normal Presented by: Bob Greene For more than 20 years, monthly employment statistics revealed that the number of unemployed individuals in the US exceeded the number of open non-agricultural positions. Then, right around April 2018, we were introduced to the talent inversion, meaning there were far more open jobs in the US economy than unemployed people to fill them. In May of 2019, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced a new low in the unemployment rate, which masked a 70% increase in the gap between unemployment and available jobs. This jump from 1.1 million available jobs to over 1.7 million open jobs occurred in just one month. Since then, unemployment has reached a 51-year low of 3.5%, continuing and intensifying employers' ongoing fight to attract and retain the best talent. Certain industries, like healthcare, hospitality and manufacturing, have been feeling the impact of this change in employment “supply and demand” dynamics most acutely, and there are specific factors that exacerbate the problem for them. However, it is just a matter of time until all employers feel the same effects.
