INTERRUPTING WHITE SUPREMACY
DATES: MARCH - MAY, 2020: SESSIONS HELD ON TUESDAYS STARTING 3/17,
3/24, 3/31, 4/7, 4/14, 4/21, 4/28, 5/5 4:30-7:00PM (2.5 HOURS WEEKLY
FOR 8 WEEKS).

FEE: $100 (ONLY FIVE SPOTS AVAILABLE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE M.ED.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT THE U OF MN.
DESCRIPTION:
THIS SEMINAR WILL EXPLORE HOW AND WHY, IN THIS CURRENT MOMENT, SOME
YOUTH ARE CHOOSING TO ADOPT WHITE SUPREMACIST IDEAS AND BEHAVIORS. AS
A CLASS WE WILL DISCUSS HOW THIS PHENOMENON SHOWS UP IN OUR DAILY
PRACTICES; RESEARCH IDENTIFIED AREAS OF INTEREST; AND WORK TO
UNDERSTAND HOW WE MIGHT BUILD OUR SKILL SETS AND KNOWLEDGE BASE TO
BETTER RESPOND AND SUPPORT YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY. THE COURSE WILL
INVOLVE GUEST SPEAKERS, PRACTICE ACTIVITIES, MEDIA, DISCUSSION,
READING, CURRENT CASE STUDIES, JOURNALING AND SOME OUT OF CLASS
RESEARCH.
WHAT THIS IS NOT:
THIS SEMINAR IS NOT AN INTRODUCTION TO UNDERSTANDING PRIVILEGE,
IDENTITY, SYSTEMIC OR INSTITUTIONAL RACISM. THIS SEMINAR IS NOT A
YOUTH SOCIAL JUSTICE 101 TRAINING OR COURSE ON HOW WHITE YOUTH WORKERS
CAN IMPROVE THEIR WORK WITH YOUNG ADULTS OF COLOR. WHILE THESE
IMPORTANT TOPICS ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN QUESTIONS WE WILL EXPLORE, THIS
SEMINAR WILL BE SPECIFICALLY EXAMINING YOUTH WHITE SUPREMACY & HOW WE
MIGHT RECOGNIZE, RESPOND, AND SUPPORT COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY THIS
PHENOMENON. PARTICIPANTS WILL BE SUPPORTED IN SEEKING COMMUNITY
RESOURCES AS NEEDED FOR ADDITIONAL TRAINING WHICH IS BEYOND THE SCOPE
OF THIS SEMINAR.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM STUDENTS AND
YOUTH WORKERS IN THE TWIN CITIES WHO WORK WITH YOUTH WHO ARE, HAVE OR
MIGHT BE ADOPTING WHITE SUPREMACIST THOUGHT, ACTION OR BEHAVIOR.
WHAT YOU'LL HAVE WHEN YOU WALK AWAY:
● PARTICIPANTS FEEL MORE CONFIDENT IN DISCUSSING THIS ISSUE BOTH IN
AND OUTSIDE OF THE GROUP
● PARTICIPANTS ARE MORE FAMILIAR WITH CURRENT TRENDS IN YOUTH WHITE
SUPREMACY AND THE WAYS BOTH YOUNG PEOPLE AND YOUTH WORKERS ARE
EXPERIENCING AND RESPONDING TO THIS
● PARTICIPANTS HAVE IDENTIFIED THE QUESTIONS AND PRACTICES THAT THEY
CAN PURSUE TO INCREASE THEIR OWN ABILITY TO RESPOND AND TO SUPPORT
YOUTH WHO ARE AT RISK TO ENGAGE WITH, OR WHO ARE ORGANIZING AGAINST,
YOUTH WHITE SUPREMACY
