REBECCA CODERDOJO AT MINNEAPOLIS COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE
REBECCA CODERDOJO IS A SAFE AND FUN LEARNING PROGRAM FOR _GIRLS-ONLY,
AGES 8-17,_ TO EXPLORE CODING.
STUDENTS UNDER 13
Parents—if one or more of your children are under 13, you must
remain onsite at Rebecca CoderDojo for the duration of the event.
There is a nice lounge area near the event room for parents to use. We
appreciate your cooperation!
If you’re under 13, a parent or guardian must register for you.
LOCATION & PARKING
The event will take place in the T building
[http://www.minneapolis.edu/Contact-Us/Campus-Map.html] on level
three in room T3000
[http://www.minneapolis.edu/media/External-Site/Files/Contact-Us/Campus-Maps/Technical-Building-Level-Three.pdf] and
will begin promptly at 1:30pm. The room is not easy to find so please
look at the campus map
[http://www.minneapolis.edu/Contact-Us/Campus-Map.html] and T building
map
[http://www.minneapolis.edu/media/External-Site/Files/Contact-Us/Campus-Maps/Technical-Building-Level-Three.pdf]
carefully. Also be sure to allow yourself extra time for parking and
finding the room. Street parking (i.e., meter parking) around MCTC is
typically free on Saturdays (be sure to double check!); otherwise,
there is a parking ramp
[http://www.minneapolis.edu/Contact-Us/Parking.html] directly west of
the T building and connected through the skyway. The cost is typically
$5 for the day. Several public transit options are available; please
check MetroTransit [http://www.metrotransit.org/] for the latest
schedules.
WHAT IS CODERDOJO?
CoderDojos [https://coderdojo.com/] are free computer programming
clubs for young people led by groups of volunteers. REBECCA
CODERDOJO will be using Scratch
[https://scratch.mit.edu/] (easy-to-use language to build games and
animations), AppInventor
[http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/] (Android mobile apps), Arduino
[https://www.arduino.cc/] (electronics and circuits), Python
[https://www.python.org/] (general purpose programming) and
JavaScript [https://www.javascript.com/] (front-end language for web)
- all programming languages that can be quickly learned.
MENTORS
Mentors can be at any level of programming experience or no experience
at all; so you don’t need to be an expert programmer to be a great
mentor! Mentors of all gender identities welcome. Mentors are
expected to arrive by 1:00pm on event days and stay until 3:45pm. If
you want to sign up to be a mentor at future events, please fill out
this form [http://goo.gl/forms/4gG1uA63sy] and we'll get back to you
to get setup for the next event!
WHAT TO BRING?
AppInventor students need a gmail account. Scratch students need an
email account to save their work. Without these, students can still
participate in the event but won't be able to save their work for
later.
