Juan William Chávez is an artist and cultural activist who creates
and shares space with the built and natural environment to address
community-identified issues. Chávez graduated from The Kansas City
Art Institute and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is
the founder of the Northside Workshop in Saint Louis and has received
numerous awards including a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation
fellowship, the Great Rivers Biennial Grant, and the Graham Foundation
Grant for Advanced Studies in Fine Art. His socially engaged and
community based projects include: the Indianapolis Bee Sanctuary, the
Honey Trailer, the Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary, and the Lantern Project
in Saint Louis. Chávez teaches drawing at Webster University. Learn
