Designed for sailors ages eight and older who are ready to learn and
practice fundamental sailing skills while gaining greater confidence
skippering 420s and Optimists. Sailors generally spend two to three
years mastering the fundamentals in the Beginner Program before
advancing to the Intermediate Level. Students are taught in the
sailing school boats with one to three students per boat depending on
skill level. The goal is to teach each sailor how to confidently
control the tiller and sail simultaneously in order to handle the
boats independently. The goal is for our beginner sailors to become
proficient in 1.) Rigging, knot tying, boat maintenance and water
safety, 2.) Recovery from capsizing, 3.) The basic points of sailing
including, 4.) Tacking/sailing against the wind (upwind), 5.)
Reaching/sailing 90 degrees to the wind 5.) Jibing/sailing with the
wind (downwind). Instructors will teach the students using lots of fun
and competitive games! Once comfortable with the basics you will do a
little racing as well!
