HADDONFIELD, NJ – For one day only, time is rolled back to the
Revolutionary Era when the Continental “rebels” and the British
Red Coats battle with live muskets in Haddonfield on Saturday, June 1
at 1 p.m. The annual “skirmish” will be the focus of a day chock
full of events that runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout
Haddonfield.
New this year will be free, family-friendly entertainment along Kings
Highway including the Sea Dogs – a band of pirates, kids games,
caricatures, pillory and stockade photo ops, arts and crafts, food and
more. Volunteers from the Friends of the Indian King Tavern are
commemorating the eighth annual reenactment that marks the 242nd
anniversary of the Battle at Monmouth, New Jersey, and tells the tale
of Haddonfield’s rich Revolutionary War heritage.
The day’s events begin at 10 a.m. on June 1, when the Second
Pennsylvania Regiment – the Continentals - will encamp at the Indian
King Tavern Museum until the troops encounter the First Battalion of
New Jersey Volunteers (Red Coats) at 1 p.m. promptly. Throughout the
day, British soldiers will carouse, loot and engage with people in
Haddonfield’s busy shopping district.
Kings Highway from Haddon Avenue to Grove Street will close just
before 1 p.m. as the Red Coats will march upon the Indian King and
encounter a regiment of Colonial Patriots. There will be plenty of
sidewalk space for viewing and cheering along Kings Highway. The
soldiers will arrive at 1 p.m. – the British are very prompt - and
the conflict should take about 20 minutes, so don’t be late.
Soldier reenactors will be available to meet visitors after the
skirmish. Later in the afternoon, children can march in formation with
wooden muskets in front of the Tavern Museum. Also, tours of the
historic tavern will be offered all day.
