Abstract
In Resilient Communities: Non-Violence and Civilian Agency in Communal War (Cambridge University Press, 2018), Jana Krause analyzes civilian agency in communal conflicts and mobilization for violence and non-violence ‘from below’. The book explains the causal role of civilian agency in conflict escalation to communal wars and in the emergence of nonviolent communities and social resilience. Her analysis draws on extensive fieldwork in ethno-religious conflicts in eastern Indonesia (Ambon, Maluku province) and in central Nigeria (Jos, Plateau State).
Resilient Communities won the 2019 Lee Ann Fujii Award for Innovation in the Interpretive Study of Political Violence of the American Political Science Association’s Interpretive Methodologies and Methods (IMM) Section and was Finalist for the 2019 Conflict Research Society Book of the Year Award.
