The Newark Culture Con is a free and public celebration of
diversity, representation, and inclusion in the comics industry. It is
essentially a comic con with all the traditional fixings (cosplay,
vendors, panel discussions, artists on-site, etc.) but with an
emphasis on diversity, representation, and inclusion in the arts,
especially in the comic book space and all related genres, both in
front of and behind the camera.
Culture Con is also an official event of the annual Rutgers Day
celebration, which includes festivities throughout the state of New
Jersey and brings together Rutgers alumni, faculty, staff, students,
and affiliates from all over the Northeast Region and beyond. It’s a
day that consists of performances, activities, and exhibits, and draws
an average of 4,000 guests to the Newark celebration alone. This
celebration is also free and open to the public.
Culture Con will be held on Saturday April 27, 2019 in our newly
opened arts and cultural space, Express Newark, which is housed in
the recently renovated and iconic Hahne & Co. Building in
downtown Newark and across from the historic Robert Treat Hotel as
well as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
