January 26: Birds from The Beginning
This program is an introduction to birds. We will explore the unique
characteristics of birds including their anatomy, adaptations, and
behavior. Families will be introduced to the basics of bird
identification and will learn how to use binoculars. We will then go
on a bird walk to observe the winter bird residents of Duke Farms at
bird feeders and in the field.
February 23: Eagles; Our Early Nesters
Everyone is excited about the eagles that live and nest at Duke Farms.
Did you know they live here year-round and lay their eggs in the
middle of winter? This program will include the life cycle and habits
of our majestic eagles.
March 29: Spring Migration; Flight and Feathers
Many birds flew the coop for the winter, but they begin to return with
the first signs of spring. We will learn how birds are adapted for
long migration flights and take an in depth look at feathers and
features that make flight possible.
APRIL 19: TWEETS AND TWITTERS; BIRD COMMUNICATION
May is the time when birds become very vocal and even noisy as they
establish territories and search for mates. We will explore bird
communication as well as mating and nesting. Put your cell phones away
as we listen for the live tweets, twitters and songs of the birds of
spring.
