CLASS MATERIALS: Conga Drum In this Conga course, students will
develop a performing and listening repertoire of music from the
Caribbean and Africa and their manifestations in the United States. In
this course, scholars will learn the history of the Conga drum
(African and Caribbean Influences), the names of the drums (Tumbadora,
Segundo, and Quinto), the names of distinct rhythms (Bomba, Igbo,
Funga, and Samba and Conga) and they will be able to identify regional
rhythms (Bomba from Puerto Rico, Conga from Cuba, Igbo from Haiti,
Funga from Liberia, Samba from Brazil). Scholars will be able to
express in drumming, an understanding of the rhythms and their
origins.
