Explore BROOKLYN's scenic treasure, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted
and Calvert Vaux after their completion of Central Park. Learn why
Olmsted and Vaux came to prefer this park to their original Manhattan
masterpiece. Come discover BROOKLYN!
This walking tour begins at historic Grand Army Plaza, where you'll
see the famous Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch. From there, we'll
begin our journey of the highlights of PROSPECT PARK. We'll journey
past the Long Meadow, the best people-watching spot in BROOKLYN,
toward the famous Picnic House. From there, we continue into the
Ravine, BROOKLYN's only forest. Other sites we'll see include the
children's carousel near the zoo, the Lefferts Historic House, the
PROSPECT PARK BOATHOUSE AND AUDUBON CENTER, beautiful arches and
bridges, before finally ending at the restored Lakeside Center.
This park feels much more alive than its Manhattan counterpart, with
baseball games, barbecuing, drummers grove, the dog beach, and tons of
BROOKLYN energy.
Along the way, your guide will recount the history of Olmsted and
Vaux's BROOKLYN masterpiece and how their experiences with Central
Park shaped this park's trajectory. Hear how Vaux's decision to scrap
the original plan led to the creation of the nearby BROOKLYN Museum
and BROOKLYN Botanic Garden. Learn the history of this land in
BROOKLYN, from Dutch farming to Revolutionary War battles! You'll
discover a new appreciation for BROOKLYN and its amazing history and
cultures. Your guide will also take questions as you go, to help you
feel right at home.
This tour operates year-round, so you can experience PROSPECT PARK IN
WINTER BEAUTY, Spring blooms, Summer frenzy, and Fall colors.
