Basic Carpentry Skills 101 introduces students to basic carpentry
concepts of layout, cutting, and fastening, while building a pair of
sawhorses that students will take home after the class. The skills
learned in this course form a foundation for both rough carpentry and
more detailed finish work. After this course, students will be able to
safely use a range of hand and power tools and will understand the
fundamentals of construction. This course can be taken as a
stand-alone course, or as a precursor to any of the other longer
project-based courses. Students will build a pair of sturdy sawhorses
that are theirs to take home after the workshop. These horses are
constructed from 2x material and plywood, and serve as a good
introduction to cross-cutting, ripping, cutting angles, and using
plywood. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
