A CUBAN MAESTRO REVISITS 'ABBEY ROAD'

On the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Abbey Road, the last album in which all four Beatles participated, Cuban maestro and composer Armando Tranquilino returns to the CCCNY to take us behind the scenes of the carefully crafted recordings and ambitious musical arrangements, bringing to life a magical period in the history of popular music. First issued on September 26, 1969 Abbey Road was the final Beatles album to be recorded, but not their last to be released. Let It Be, though mainly recorded in January, 1969 was finally released in May, 1970 alongside the film of the same name. For the first time on a Beatles album, the front cover contained neither the group’s name nor the album title, just that iconic photograph taken on the zebra crossing near the entrance to the studios in London NW8 in August 1969. As expected, it was an instant success. Abbey Road spent months at the very top of the British and U.S. album charts, influencing musical sensibilities the world over, including the likes of Willy Chirino and many other budding Cuban-American composers at the time, such as maestro Tranquilino. Delving into each song, the maestro will offer a composer’s view on the melody, lyrics, harmony, rhythm, tone-color, and structure of the Fab Four’s Abbey Road, illuminating and enriching his discussion with live performances on guitar, bass, and piano.
