Prohibition was a unique period of time in American history.
Perhaps nowhere in New York City was this more demonstrated than in
the pre-dominantly Irish neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. A
journalist once asked a Hell’s Kitchen resident how many speakeasies
are there in Hell’s Kitchen. She replied “There’s more
speakeasies than children and there are very easily 200 children per
block.” Having the benefit of being next to the Hudson River,
many of the early successful bootleggers in New York City were
Hell’s Kitchen residents at some point in their lives either in
their formative years or as adults. They would utilize the coming
and goings of ships on the Hudson River, called rum runners, to
receive illicit alcohol. We will learn about who many of these early
bootleggers were, their schemes and the organization they belonged to
dedicated to trafficking in the shipped alcohol.
We will also learn of the rebels amongst these scofflaws. Those
independent-minded gangsters who often didn’t play by underworld’s
rules and the consequences of their actions. Further, we will see
how Prohibition ended and how the gangsters ended—either their lives
or their careers as bootleggers.
In addition, we will learn about some more historical facts of the
neighborhood including Death Avenue, Doctor’s Row, the old Paddy’s
Market and the ultimate rise of the modern Irish mob. And, of
course, you will learn why Hell’s Kitchen is called Hell’s
Kitchen. All this and more on this spirited pub crawl through
Hell’s Kitchen.
FAQS
Do I need to purchase tickets in advance or can I purchase tickets at
the door?
Please purchase your tickets in advance. If you already purchased
tickets and need to add people to the pub CRAWL, please contact US at
info@urbanvillagetours.com or 347-868-7710. If a tour is is running
on a certain date and the event has not reached capacity, you may buy
tickets at the door at the start.
WHAT IS YOUR REFUND POLICY?
We have a 24-hour refund policy for tickets purchased directly from
this website. Please contact US no later than 24 hours before the
start time of the tour at info@urbanvillagetours.com. If you do not
cancel your tour within this time frame you will be held responsible
for the total amount of your tour. A refund will be issued,
however, if we need to cancel a walking tour because of severe weather
or a tour guide cannot make the tour and no substitute is available.
What is your rescheduling policy?
Tour tickets can be rescheduled with at least 24 hours before the tour
start time at info@urbanvillagetours.com with the following
exceptions:
* In the case of extreme weather in the forecast, we will contact
you at the email address you provided when you booked to offer you
rescheduling options. Otherwise, we conduct our tours rain, snow or
shine.
* If you’ve had a family emergency or an unforeseen trip date
change, at our discretion, we will try to reschedule your tour
reservations (depending on availability) or issue a credit voucher.
In such a scenario, please contact US right away at
info@urbanvillagetours.com.
* If we have to cancel a tour.
Will the tour operate under any weather conditions?
All of our walking tours will take place rain, snow or shine. Please
bring an umbrella and dress appropriately. Remember approximately
half the tour will be indoors. However in the case of severe
inclement weather (90% forecast with winds at 16 mph or 26 kph) we do
reserve the right to cancel a tour. In these instances, we will
notify you via the email or phone number provided at purchase and
offer refunds and rescheduling options.
ARE THERE GROUP SIZE MINIMUMS AND MAXIMUMS?
We like to cap the pub crawls at 16 adults to keep it possible when
entering the pubs. As for minimums, we will do the tour for one
customer if necessary. While, we would be operating at a loss, we
believe there are many ways to travel and enjoy experiences and
sometimes doing it solely is one of them.
IF I MISS THE WALKING TOUR I PURCHASED, CAN I JUST SHOW UP FOR ANOTHER
ONE?
No. Your ticket is only valid for the tour you selected at the time
of purchase (both date and time specific). This allows US to reserve
your spot in the event the pub CRAWL SELLS OUT.
I LIVE IN NEW YORK. WILL I APPRECIATE THE TOURS?
Absolutely! Most of our customers are New Yorkers and they often
exclaim just how much they didn’t know about their own home city!
NEW YORK City is big with four hundred years of history. Tour
Guides specialize in this. Just another aspect of the service we
provide.
Is the tour suitable for minors or children?
Yes. According to NEW YORK State law, minors 16 years or older can
legally enter bars without a parent or guardian. However, they can
not drink until they are 21. Of course it is the individual bar’s
discretion whether or not to allow a minor into their establishment.
If you bring a minor on the tour, please notify US in advance and we
will choose bars that might not have a bouncer or doorman and would
permit the minor to enter the bar (and not drink, of course).
How much will we walk and is it strenuous?
Our pub crawls tend to be anywhere from one mile to two miles which is
considered an easy to moderate walk. Our Central Park pub crawl is
2.8 miles which is considered to be a hike.
What clothing should I wear?
You should definitely wear shoes comfortable for walking on the city
streets. You can wear 20‘s clothing for our PROHIBITION PUB CRAWLS
IF THE MOOD HITS YOU. Some of the bars are on the upscale side, so
we like to suggest you look “business casual” or “smart
casual”. That would infer no, cut-offs, jeans, flip-flops,
sandals, or T-shirts. Other than that, check the forecast and dress
accordingly.
Are gratuities included in the walking tour price?
Gratuities are not part of the tour fee, but if you enjoyed your time
on the tour, gratuities are very much appreciated.
Where do we meet for the tour?
We will email you a confirmation and the precise meeting location
right after you have purchased your tour. If you don’t see the
confirmation please check your email spam folder. Some meeting
locations will give the address of the pub.
What do I do if I am late?
The tour starts promptly at the designated time, so please try to
arrive 5 to 10 minutes early. If you are not at the meeting location
at the start time, we will begin the tour leave without you for the
sake of the attendees who arrived on time. If you don’t find US,
we will provide you with a contact number and email in case an urgent
matter prevented you from showing up on time. We will try to assist
your in finding your tour group.

cocktail will be included on the tour per passenger that is 21 years

including the first location which has a pop-up restaurant.
