The Open NEWSROOM IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE CITY AND BROOKLYN
PUBLIC LIBRARY TO FIGURE OUT HOW LOCAL NEWS CAN BETTER SERVE YOU.
ACCESS TO QUALITY FOOD IN RED HOOK CAN BE LIMITED. WHAT COULD THE
COMMUNITY DO TO SOLVE THAT? WHAT COULD JOURNALISTS DO TO TELL THAT
STORY?
HOW DOES INFORMATION FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REACH RED HOOK
PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS? COULD THAT BE IMPROVED?
DOES RED HOOK FEEL LIKE AN ISLAND?

Brooklyn Public Library [https://www.bklynlibrary.org/] and Red Hook
residents on Feb. 25 to answer these questions, find solutions to
these issues, build something new and then reach the people who need
it the most.
This is the fourth round of The Open Newsroom
[https://thecity.nyc/2019/06/how-can-news-better-serve-you-join-the-open-newsroom.html?utm_campaign=open-newsroom&utm_source=event&utm_medium=eventbrite&utm_term=RedHook]
at Red Hook Library — an initiative between THE CITY and BPL to make
local news a collaborative process with neighborhood residents.
For this round, we’ll share the resources and research we’ve
collected over the past few months based on what residents told us
were most important to them.
We’ve even expanded on the topics that came up at the last meeting,
that now include:
* ACCESS TO QUALITY FOOD IN ALL OF RED HOOK, NOT JUST SCHOOLS
* HOW THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CAN BETTER COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS
AND CAREGIVERS IN RED HOOK, ESPECIALLY AHEAD OF THE REZONING
DISCUSSION
* THE HISTORY OF RED HOOK AND WHY THERE ARE ISSUES ACCESSING FOOD AND
TRANSPORTATION, AMONG OTHER THINGS; THE PRESENT DAY TROUBLES RESIDENTS
FACE THAT MAY MAKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD FEEL ISOLATED; AND THE SOLUTIONS
FOLKS CAN TAKE TO MITIGATE THESE CHALLENGES
If you want to get involved, have answers to these questions, thoughts
about how we might tell these stories, ideas for solutions or
resources to share, come to The Open Newsroom on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at
5:30 p.m.
Your input is important to this process.
If you’ve missed any of the past meetings, or haven’t attended a
single one, don’t sweat it. We’ll catch you up… and also provide
snacks.
If you have any questions, you can email US at
opennewsroom@thecity.nyc or call/text us at (646) 389-9289
Oh, and bring your friends!

Here’s some more general information about the Open Newsroom.
THE CITY, a new, independent, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to
hard-hitting reporting that serves the people of New York, is
launching a year-long project with Brooklyn Public Library called The
Open Newsroom. The two organizations will convene at least 24
neighborhood meetings at six library branches over the next year to
better understand how information finds its way to and through a
community and to explore how to make local news more collaborative.
You’ll also learn more about the kinds of local reporting THE CITY
is doing — and, more importantly, THE CITY will get to know you and
better understand what’s important to you and your neighbors.
Reporters from THE CITY, library staff and community leaders will
always be on hand.
