How did China—where style was once limited to monochromatic Mao
suits—become a player on the global fashion stage? In Yellow is
Forbidden, we see the emergence of one of China’s top designers, Guo
Pei, starting with the dark days when her mother told her yellow was a
forbidden color. The film follows the designer as she hits the
international scene—when Rihanna wore her hand-embroidered canary
yellow gown to the Met Gala in 2015—and explores tradition versus
modernity and acceptance versus prejudice in fashion in today’s
China. Following the screening, Chinese fashion designers, bloggers,
and influencers will share thoughts about today’s fashion scene.
