Japanese Samurai Tea Ceremony Practice - February

このクラスでは、日本の武家茶道である上田宗箇流のお点前や歴史、美意識などを学ぶことができます。

講師は、日本の茶道家である長野佳嗣氏が務めます。

そこには、一杯のお茶を美味しくもらうための、様々な創意工夫が盛り込まれています。茶道は、日本人が800年をかけて築き上げた独自の文化です。

この茶道の発展を長らく支え続けたのが、武士でした。意外に思うかもしれませんが、武士にとって茶道は、武術を学ぶことと同じく、必須の教養とされていたのです。武士にとって茶道は、心の修行でもあり、人とのコミュニケーションを学ぶ場でもあり、そして何より、日々訪れる戦の重圧から解き放たれる癒しの場でありました。

上田宗箇流は、今から400年以上前に広島で活躍した上田宗箇という武士が始めた茶道です。この上田宗箇も他の武士たちと同様に茶道に深く没入し、88年間の生涯をかけて、武士の魂や美意識を茶道に積極的に取り入れた人物として知られています。その茶道の世界は現在も広島の地に残り、数千人の人々が日々学んでいます。

このクラスでは、茶道や日本文化をほとんど知らない初心者の方から、それらに詳しい上級者の方までどなたでもご参加いただけます。会場であるグローバス和室は、日本の伝統的な茶室空間の設計に基づいてそのため、マンハッタンにいながら、本物の日本を感じることができる素晴らしい空間です。

In this class, you can learn about the tea ceremony, history, and aesthetics of the Ueda Soko School, a Japanese samurai tea ceremony school.

The instructor is the Japanese tea master, Yoshitsugu Nagano.

The Japanese tea ceremony is a unique culture that the Japanese have built over the past 800 years. It contains various ingenuity to enjoy a cup of tea.

It was samurai who supported the development of this tea ceremony for a long time. It may seem surprising, but for samurai, the tea ceremony was regarded as an essential culture as well as learning martial arts. For the samurai, the tea ceremony was a spiritual training, a place to learn how to communicate with people, and more than anything, a place of healing where they could be freed from the pressure of daily wars.

Ueda Soko School is the tea ceremony started by a samurai called Ueda Soko who was active in Hiroshima more than 400 years ago. Like other samurai, Ueda was deeply involved in the tea ceremony and is known for actively incorporating the spirit of the samurai and his sense of beauty into it over his 88-year life. The world of tea ceremony still exists in Hiroshima, where thousands of people learn it.

This class is open to anyone from beginners who know little about the tea ceremony and Japanese culture to advanced students who are familiar with them. The Globus Japanese-style room is based on the design of a traditional Japanese tea-ceremony room. So it is a wonderful space where you can feel real Japan while you are in Manhattan.
