Please join Professor of History, Mark Sample, as he tells the fascinating story of one of America's most famous female leaders- Jeannette Rankin! In 1916 Jeannette Rankin became the first woman in United States history elected to the House of Representatives. She had been involved in the women's suffrage movement prior to that and continued with it until the passage of the 19th Amendment. Rankin was also a pacifist who voted against the war. Re-elected in 1940, she also voted against World War II. She is the only person in United States history to vote against both world wars. In her late 80's she also protested the Vietnam conflict.
