THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN BEEKEEPING SCHOOL 2020This is 9th year
we are having Beekeeping School. The school consists of a series of
16 two to two and a half hour long classes. The school is intended to
help beginning beekeepers develop basic beekeeping skills.
Participants will follow the establishment and development of colonies
of honey bees over the course of one growing season beginning in March
and ending in October. The classes are held ever two or three weeks
throughout the summer. Each class consists of an hour-long lecture
followed by an hour and a half of practical hands-on training.
The school is being co-sponsored by the Greenwich Audubon Center,
Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Bedford Bee Honeybee
Service, and the Melisseus Honeybee Research and Education Initiative.
In an attempt to accommodate both weekend/midweek and daytime/evening
schedules we will hold two series of classes. The first will be
Tuesdays from 6:00PM to 8:30PM at the Stone Barns Center for Food and
Agriculture in Pocantico Hills, NY. The second will be on Sundays
from 9:00AM to 11:30AM at the Greenwich Audubon Center in Greenwich,
CT. Most weeks the Greenwich Audubon class will be held first and the
Stone Barns class will be held the following Tuesday
Three of the classes are combined at the Greenwich Audubon CENTER.
Weeks marked with an asterisk in the schedule below are
combined. Click here for a complete schedule for both locations and
additional information at the location
[http://bedfordbee.com/beekeeping-school.htm].
Participants should select their preferred day - Sunday or Tuesday -
and enroll in that series. But to accommodate scheduling conflicts
that may occur throughout the summer, students will be allowed to
attend classes in either series. The exact same material will be
presented at both sites. This is the enrollment site for the STONE
BARNS CENTER FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ON TUESDAYS. There is a
separate Eventbrite enrollment page for the Greenwich Audobon Center.

The class will be limited to 20 people at each location.
The first day we will be meeting at the Stone Barns Center for Food
and Agriculture is March 31, 2020 at 6:00 PM. Upon registering you
will receive an email with information about where to go and what to
bring, etc. If not all of the 20 available spots are filled by March
31, we will allow late enrollment up until the Honey Bee Life Cycle
class on May 5th. After that enrollment will be closed until next
year.
The class will be co-taught by Maggie Schwed, beekeeper at the Stone
Barns Center for Food and Agriculture and D. J. Haverkamp, owner of
Bedford Bee Honeybee Service.
Basic safety equipment (gloves, smoker, bee jacket, etc) are provided.
Each participant will be required to sign a liability waiver and
volunteer agreement. We will be working with live honey bees as a
part of each of the workshops - there is a very real possibility of
being stung at some point during the summer. Participants take full
responsibility for any allergic reaction which may result.
The classes have been refined and improved each of the past eight
years. This year we will offer two bonus sessions - one on the
afternoon of Easter 4/12 and one on the afternoon of Mother's Day
5/10.
We believe the hands-on on nature of this SCHOOL MAKES IT ONE OF THE
BEST LEARNING EXPERIENCES POSSIBLE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN LEARNING
THE SKILL OF BEEKEEPING.
