Though the Hanby House is best known in Westerville for its connection to the William and Benjamin Hanby family, the Fouse family lived there longer than any of the house's other inhabitants. Squire Fouse was enslaved until the end of the Civil War and came to Westerville to work and raise his family.
He purchased the Hanby House, a former Underground Railroad site. His son, William Henry Fouse, also made history as the first African-American graduate of Westerville High School and Otterbein College.
