Join YFPA for a tour of St. James the Less! The Church of St James the
Less was built between 1846-1850 as a faithful evocation of a
Medieval English parish church--St James the Less was in fact the
first time in the USA that a church was built following almost exactly
an actual Medieval church. Everything reflects the storied 177-year
history of the church and its beautiful surrounding church yard: from
the pews, to the English-made floor tiles, the jeweled rood screen,
and the French stained glass windows. But St James the Less is also
the story of the communities that have shaped--and been shaped
by--this exceptional building. The tour will especially highlight the
dynamic between the architecture of the church and the people that
have been a part of the deep sense of spirituality evident here from
1846. The Church of St James the Less is now the heart of the St James
School (established 2011) serving the surrounding neighborhoods of
North Philadelphia; the chimes of the Wanamaker Memorial bell tower
once again ringing out across the landscape as a testament to the
continued landmark status of St James the Less. Following the tour of
the property, we'll head over to Wissahickon Brewing Company for a
happy hour, 3705 W School House Ln, Philadelphia, PA 19129. This will
be a no-host bar.
