July Main Line WRITERS GROUP - MONDAY, July 15,, 2019 - STAND-up READING OF YOUR WORKAuthor readings can be an important part of an author's efforts to build an audience. But reading uses and requires a different set of skills...skills which a writer doesn't hone when writing. And it;s different than critique, where an audience is there for the purpose of offering the feedback of what does and doesn't work about your work. To prepare for this meeting, bring a complete work or segment that can be read in no more than six minutes. That's your hard stop time. Practice your reading until you can do it smoothly. Edit it so that dialog is clear (you may need more "he said" or "she saids" in it). Print your piece out with large type for easy reading. And submit in advance a short one paragraph biography that will be spoken by a third party before you read. Of course, if you don't wish to read, attend and learn from what the others do. Our meeting place is the Black Powder Tavern, south of The King of Prussia Mall just off Rt 202. 1164 Valley Forge Rd · Wayne, PA. Across from the Gateway Shopping Center and about seven minutes from our previous meeting place, Peppers. The meeting officially starts at 7:00 pm but many of us come early (around 6:30) to eat and socialize a bit - but you can order your meal at any time during the meeting. We use a private room and the acoustics are great. You'll have no problem hearing our speakers or each other. Meetings officially end around 9 pm although some stay for more socializing afterwards. Just a reminder that we don't get charged for the great room, but The Black Powder Tavern does have the expectation that attendees will order a meal. It is a fair expectation. The Restaurant offers a variety of sandwiches and entres on their menu and you can order from the entire menu. PURCHASING YOUR MEAL IS A REQUIREMENT OF ATTENDING THE MEETING. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. Mark your calendar for every third Monday of the month. Feel free to tell others and bring a friend or two. PLEASE READ 2019 is our tenth anniversary year! This is a membership based GROUP. Annual dues are $50 (that's just $4.25 a meeting) and cover a variety of expenses including web site hosting, Meetup administration fees (you get the service free but I pay for them), the equipment, batteries, printing, guest speaker meals, etc. You are invited to attend one meeting for $10 as a sample ($12 by credit card), to see whether it is a fit for you. If you decide to pay the annual dues that evening, your membership dues will cover the meeting as well. We have never set a limit on the number of interested writers who can attend. If you show up without RSVPing or RSVP at the last minute, there is almost always room for you. But please, if you know you won't be able to make it and have RSVP'd YES, please take the time to go in and change your RSVP status to NO. Likewise, try to get your RSVP in for yes as early as possible so I can prepare the restaurant. It helps us determine any changes needed in seating arrangements.
