Participants in this workshop will explore the many aspects of ladies’ shifts from 1760 to 1800 and learn how to create one of their own.

Handouts will be provided, but more importantly, participants will be able to examine an extant shift dated from 1790-1810 as well as handle and explore a reproduction of a 1770s shift.

Workshop Dates:

Saturday, February 22; 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Sunday, February 23; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Instruction will be given on the measuring, cutting, and sewing of your own garment. We will speak about variations in sleeve and neckline styles and will offer these as options for your projects as well. By the end of this class you will be well on your way to a finished shift.Students should be confident in their hand stitching ability. We will use the running stitch, backstitch, buttonhole stitch, and felling stitch.

Materials and lunch will be provided to all participants.

Instructor Bio:

Cait Southard has been in love with the 18th century since she was 9 years old, and has been researching historical clothing design and construction for nearly a decade. She is the owner of Willoughby & Rose, a historical fashion and theatrical costume business, and specializes in 18th century undergarments and children’s clothing.
