George Washington Takes Command: The Journey Through Jersey, 1775 – Trenton

250 years ago George Washington departed the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to take command of the new Continental Army at Cambridge, Massachusetts. Gen. Washington crossed New Jersey over three days in June 1775 on a journey that would prove a prelude to the eight years of the Revolutionary War to come.

Follow George Washington’s first “Journey Through Jersey” as Commander in Chief through Trenton, New Brunswick and Newark and across the Hudson River from Hoboken to take command of the Continental Army 250 years ago in 1775.

Before or after the lecture, visit Oh Freedom! Blacks on the Battlefront and in the Aftermath of the Revolutionary War in New Jersey, a traveling exhibit from New Jersey State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites.

Stay following the lecture for Gen. Washington’s Walk: The Journey Through Jersey, 1775 – Trenton. Meet at the 1719 William Trent House, 15 Market Street, Trenton, NJ 08611. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy footgear and bring water and snacks. The walk to and from the Trenton Makes Bridge covers about 2 ½ miles and takes about 1 ½ hours.

⭐ Revolution NJ is New Jersey’s official observance of the 250th anniversaries of New Jersey’s first Constitution July 2, 2026 and the American Revolution in New Jersey from 2024 – 2033.
