Code: Red, White & Blue to benefit needy veterans PHILADELPHIA –
Weeks after it earned 501(C)3 federal tax status, Support Homeless
Veterans (SHV) is wasting no time getting to work. On April 21, Code:
Red, White & Blue will go into effect – similar to the annual
Veteran Affairs-based Stand Down initiative, the event is aimed at
bringing together veteran service providers in an effort to make
community resources available to local veterans in need. Code: Red,
White & Blue will commission the philanthropy of Philadelphia’s
local food pantries, as well as provide products and services from
local lawmakers, health care advocates, clothing donors and legal aid.
From 9 a.m. to noon, the public is invited to the Fishtown Recreation
Center, 1202 E. Montgomery Ave., to help make a contribution to this
worthy cause. Feed-Our-Vets.org will operate a mobile food pantry for
veterans. A representative from the office of Congressman Chaka Fattah
(D-2nd of Pennsylvania) will discuss benefits available to veterans.
Ambassadors from Penn State University and Temple University will be
doling out personal hygiene products. Penn Medicine will be on hand to
help with health care questions and take blood pressure and legal aid
and counseling from the Soldier Project will also be readily
available. An Iraq War veteran and subject of the Kelly Kennedy book,
“They Fought for Each Other” will be serving hot BBQ. A number of
Philadelphia firefighters and Mayor Michael A. Nutter have been
invited. Created in 2011 to combat the growing epidemic of
homelessness among American veterans, SHV is devoted to improving the
quality of life of these often forgotten heroes. Our supported housing
program combines holistic care with classical military camaraderie to
bring veterans together, as a family. Motivated and advocated for, our
veterans are provided unique opportunities, allowing them to become
invested in a movement that supports disadvantaged veterans and
prevent homelessness among those recently discharged. Together, we can
help fight for those who once fought so bravely for us.
