The goal of the Consonance Lecture-Workshop for families with
atypical children is to empower parents and caretakers of children
exhibiting neurological impairments with the knowledge and tools that
will allow them to independently subsidize and foster the development
of their children though music listening. Our promise is to provide the
answers to a number of key questions and issues that will enable you
to take action with understanding and conviction, thus effectively
helping your child.
Why can music help? In which way can music help? What kind of music
can help? How to implement a successful listening strategy for my
child? How does music interact with other therapies? How can I keep
track of the positive music-induced changes taking place with my
child? Where can I find the right music for my child?
Our commitment is to answer these and many more questions.
Summary of Workshop
The multimedia lecture-workshop begins with a brief introduction about
the evolution of music language and production, thus providing an
updated historical perspective that allows for a more complete
appreciation of the potentialities of music at present.
We follow with scientific evidence that reveals the nature of the
relationship between music and the human brain, with the aim of
illustrating how neurophysiological orderliness is naturally unleashed
by listening to sound energy organized in tones, namely, tonal music.
You will be able to visualize sound energy and the topology of
Harmony, and also experience the sounds implicated in these processes.
We then go through successful results of studies and cases from around
the world that have applied music to recover neurological health,
showcasing examples of brain injuries afflicting atypical children
such as Child Epilepsy, Autism, West Syndrome and Stroke.
We hence show that the music order and the biological order are indeed
the same order, expressed esthetically or biologically, in alignment
with the observations made in 2001 by Dr. Mark Tramo, neuroscientist
at the Harvard Medical School: "Music is in our genes".
Accordingly, we demonstrate how the experience of appropriate and
sustained music listening can naturally reorganize brain activity,
causing a number of positive changes, both functional and structural,
in the listener. We will discuss methods to further your child´s
speech and motor abilities that can be coupled with other therapies,
and also how to monitor your child´s neurological response and
development caused by music listening.
Samples of the Consonance Questionnaire, specifically developed to
collect data on children with neurological impairments, will be
distributed to participants with the objective of collecting granular
data pertaining to the motor, phonological and cognitive condition of
each respective child. The completion of the Questionnaire will be
duly facilitated to ensure accuracy.
From the data registered in the Questionnaires, Consonance Music will
make corresponding personalized playlists containing proprietary audio
files (mp3), which will be sent to each participant through email
within 3 days, along with indications and recommendations, in order to
enable participating parents to establish a successful listening
routine at home, therefore providing the experience and benefits of
Neuromusicology to their children.
If the participant is a therapist or an educator who does not live
with an atypical child, a playlist containing proprietary audio files
(mp3) aimed at enhancing individual activities such as occupational
and speech therapy sessions, or playful, sensory-oriented group
activities and games, will be sent through email within 3 days,
according to participant´s choice.
