“Pure bliss.” “Magical experience.” “A canopy of beauty.”
“Pure splendor, a kind of secular, visual theology.” —Skyspace
visitors Come experience the sunrise and sunset in Philadelphia's only
James Turrell Skyspace, which is located inside Chestnut HIll Friends
Meetinghouse. Evening viewings begin at sunset and last 55 minutes.
Turrell created a different program for the morning viewings when
the dark becomes light. Those begin 50 minutes before sunrise. The
meetinghouse will open 15 minutes before the viewing starts and remain
open 15 minutes after it is over. The Skyspace displays directly
overhead. For comfortable viewing, guests are encouraged to bring
yoga mats and cushions to lie on the floor or prop their heads up
while sitting on the benches. The room will be the same temperature
as the air outdoors so dress appropriately. The schedule varies with
the seasons. Except in winter, there is a weekly Sunday evening
viewing; and once a month first Friday evening and first Sunday dawn
viewings. Check the Register button on the left for upcoming
sunrise and sunset viewing dates and start times, including special
holiday dates. The Skyspace experience, including roof opening, will
only occur if the temperature is above 40F with no risk of
precipitation. A 20 minute closed roof light sequence is looped if
the roof can not be opened.
